Inspired by the Red Roses: Finding Strength at Any Age

Categories: Exercise, Goals

On Saturday, I watched as England’s Red Roses finally lifted the Rugby World Cup. The celebrations were incredible, but what touched me most wasn’t just the trophy, it was everything this win represented. Three years ago, they stood in the same place with heartbreak, having lost in the final. Yet instead of letting that moment define them, they used it to drive them forward. They came back fitter, stronger, and more determined, and this time, they finished the job.

As a personal trainer, I work with many people in their 40s and 50s who are chasing big goals of their own goals that sometimes feel just out of reach. Whether it’s returning from an injury, building strength for the first time in years, or wanting to feel healthier and more confident heading into retirement, the journey can feel daunting. Like the Roses, it often involves setbacks, doubts, and the temptation to give up. But just like them, every setback can be turned into fuel.

What inspires me most about the Red Roses isn’t only the victory, it’s their bigger vision. They spoke openly about wanting to leave a legacy, to inspire girls and the next generation to believe they could play, compete, and dream just as big. That’s powerful, because it reminds us that our goals aren’t only about ourselves. When you get stronger, fitter, and healthier, you don’t just transform your own life, you set an example for your children, grandchildren, friends, and peers. You show them that it’s never too late to rise again, to aim higher, and to keep improving.

Watching the Roses this weekend reminded me that true success isn’t built in one big moment; it’s built quietly, through resilience, consistency, and belief. For my clients, it’s not about lifting a World Cup, it’s about lifting the shopping bags with ease, climbing the stairs without pain, or feeling confident on holiday. Those victories might look smaller from the outside, but they are every bit as meaningful. They are proof that effort pays off, and they inspire those around you just as much as a gold medal.

The Roses proved that legacy is not just about winning, it’s about showing others what’s possible. And that’s something each of us has the chance to do, no matter our age or starting point.

So here’s my challenge to you: what’s the next step in your journey? Whether it’s booking that first training session, committing to a morning walk, or finally deciding to prioritise your health, take inspiration from the Red Roses and start today. You never know who you might inspire along the way.
