Training with us will help you improve your technique so that you can feel confident taking part in mud runs and obstacle course races such as Tough Mudder and Spartan Race.

Obstacle Course Races tend to be designed to include three aspects; running, strength and technique, if you master all of these elements you’ll be competent on a course and handle whatever obstacle is thrown at you.

OCR is a great experience, whether you’re running as an individual or part of a team. There are so many different types of event and each race will test your fitness in multiple different ways. Whether the courses are run during the day or at night, are a short sprint or a long endurance run, you’ll need to train and prepare for every eventuality.

You’ll come across lots obstacles on a course including high walls to climb over, water to wade through, nets to crawl under, monkey bars to swing across, balance beans to walk along and heavy weights to drag along the floor or lift to the top of a hoist, as you do at Spartan. 

Races in the UK are steadily becoming more technical to keep up with their European and World counterparts. This puts us in a great position to coach you on specific techniques to use, so that you can traverse high and low rigs, learn how to climb ropes and conquer walls ranging in different heights and angles.

Our training plan is not like any of the circuit training, boot camps or long cardio sessions you might have tried in the past. Instead, we provide a strength training programme that focuses on upper body strength so you’ll be able to use the pull-up bar and do push-ups with ease.

You’ll find our core-based exercises will strengthen your abdominal muscles and improve your stability and posture when running. We’ll also work on your legs so you feel confident that whether the miles you’re covering are short or up to half-marathon length, it will feel easy.

Holding onto bars and rings on an assault course is a big part of some races and many people find this tricky, so we’ll help you work on the power in your back so you’ll be able to hold onto the bars and rings for minutes at a time.

By following our OCR training programme, you’ll know that once you line up on the start line of your race, you’ll be in the best shape possible and will have the right mindset to run a great race.

At our private Personal Training Studio in Nottingham there is a custom-built rig, which has been designed specifically to practise obstacle skills. It has a set of monkey bars, a twister, climbing holds, ropes, rings and various attachments you’ll see on a course. This means you can develop your techniques in a relaxed training environment, so when it comes to the race or a pressured situation you’ll know exactly what to do. 

I’ve worked with clients who have taken part in their first Spartan Race and Tough Mudder to those who have represented Team UK at the World Championships. I’m one of a handful of coaches in the UK who is a World OCR Certified Coach as well as having competed in a number of Obstacle Races each year including the 2019 World Championships, you’re in safe hands when you train with me.

Obstacle Course Race Training Programme Options

6 Week Small Group Training

Here’s what’s included in the Small Group Obstacle Course Race Programme:

  • Two small group training sessions a week on various days and times at our studio in Nottingham, so you have flexibility regarding when you train.
  • Sessions will be lived streamed online so you can access them at home if you're unable to attend the studio.
  • Our unique training system, which has been designed and tested by us over the years, to help ensure you can complete your event and get over any obstacle on the course.
  • We will look at your upper body and grip strength, so you can master pull-ups, get over obstacles and be as prepared as possible for race day.
  • You’ll be part of a small group, so you’ll get lots of individual attention to improve your training and see the results you’re after.
  • You’ll receive nutrition advice to support weight loss, and advice on what gear to get for your race, such as running shoes and gloves.
  • You’ll get the opportunity to go to an Obstacle Facility so that you get to practise all your techniques in a fun and friendly environment.

8 Week 1:1 OCR Skills Programme

Here’s what’s included in the One to One Obstacle Course Race Programme:

  • Two 1:1 Personal Training sessions to use in the 8 weeks, with the option to upgrade your package to include more. Either based in the studio in Nottingham or online via Zoom.
  • An eight week of Personal Training Programme designed specifically for your own goals to do at home.
  • Weekly check in’s online to monitor your progress so that we can make changes and adapt your training if needed.
  • You’ll get a copy of our Obstacle Training and Skills Guide so that you can see in-depth the training and skills needed for obstacles.
  • Not only will we cover the technical aspects to racing, but we’ll also look at the psychological elements too, this will ensure you’re mentally prepared when you step onto the start line.
  • 10% member discount on Sports Massages so that you can help prevent any aches and pains and speed up your recovery.
  • Access to our members area on Facebook, where we share exercises, tips and techniques so that you’ll feel supported when you’re with us.

OCR Training and Skills Guide

I have written the OCR Training and Skills Guide to provide everybody who is interested in Obstacle Course Racing with an extensive set of exercises and techniques that are needed to complete an OCR.

It takes you step by step through my simple coaching systems and the elements of fitness you’ll need to take part in a race. It includes over 50 exercises and training techniques which develop specific obstacle race fitness. These include warm-ups, running drills, strength, core, mobility, balance, power, plyometrics, grip and obstacle technique.

The guide is complete with pictures and videos of the each of the exercises and videos of specific obstacle technique, which include pull-ups, monkey bars, rings, ropes, the twister and skull valley.

There is a section in the guide which outlines a long term training plan for you to use to help aid and provide structure to your individual training sessions.

When you purchase the guide, you’ll get access to our OCR Skills Facebook Group where you can chat to other OCR enthusiasts about your training and we’ll set additional challenges to further advance your training.
